What is ADI part 1?

ADI Part 1 is the initial of three assessments you need to complete to become an Approved Driving Instructor in the UK. It aims to evaluate your theoretical understanding and risk recognition making sure you possess the fundamental knowledge required to instruct others on driving safely and with confidence.

ADI part 1 is made up of two sections:

Theoretical test – multiple choice queries

You will respond to 100 multiple choice questions covering four major subject areas:

  • Road Procedure
  • Road signs and signals
  • Traffic regulations
  • Teaching skills and instructional methods

In order to pass this section – you must score 85 out of 100 overall, with at least 20 correct answers in every topic band

Hazard perception test

This assessment includes 14 video segments depicting actual driving scenarios. You will recognise emerging dangers by clicking immediately upon noticing them. The highest score is 75, and a minimum of 57 is required to pass.

The entire test is completed within a single day. Both sections must be passed to progress to the next phase of training – the ADI Part 2 driving skills assessment
